“Santa Claus has the right idea. Visit people only once a year.” – Victor Borge
Depending on which holiday, or holidays, you choose to celebrate this time of year, you’re either finished, halfway through, or just starting. But, I think it’s safe to say that the holiday TV commercials, which seemingly begin right after Halloween, are officially winding down. Thankfully.
I’ve always been both intrigued and skeptical when it comes to media advertising in general, but especially during the holiday season. I understand that those commercials pay the bills for media outlets, however, do businesses/companies really see a return on the money spent on advertising? Do commercials for Bud Light really convert beer drinkers from other brands, or are they merely used to nudge their already customers into buying a few extra cases in case Uncle Charlie stops by for a visit? Are Pepsi drinkers switching to Coca-Cola because of the cute polar bears? And what the hell is a chocolate diamond and why did Mrs. Lawrence give an emphatic “NO!” when I asked if she wanted one? Does the average person smell bad all year up until the Dior ads prompt their loved ones to take action? Do people really get a Lexus or Mercedes with a bow in their driveway? And how many kids actually ask Santa for a Chutes and Ladders board game? All valid questions to which I need answers, dammit!
But, before you get the wrong idea here, there are many TV commercials that I enjoy. And this one for Geico Insurance, while not a holiday related ad, is surely my favorite right now. That being said, I already have insurance through another company and as much as I love the raccoons, I never once considered switching because of them. (Sorry Geico and raccoons.)
Admittedly, there have been some commercials that peaked my interest in products. Usually, they involve those amazing Made for TV things that I feel are genius and can’t imagine living without. But, immediately upon verbalizing such things, I get THE LOOK from Mrs. Lawrence and slink away.
Although there was one recently that I snuck an order in for and honestly, I don’t know how I’ve lived this long without it.
That’s right! I am now the proud owner of the Clever Cutter 2 in 1 Food Chopper! (Actually 2 of them because of the “But Wait, we’ll send you a second one. Just pay shipping and handling” part.)
Works like a charm and I’m hanging on to the second one because eventually, Mrs. Lawrence will break it with THAT LOOK.
And now I gotta run. Just saw an ad for Hamper Hoops and they said “supplies are limited!”.
Happy gift returning y’all!
